Mutually beneficial Canadian dating

Beaver Babies

Traditional dating has always required optimism. In Canada it now also requires restaurant money, parking money, Uber money and the nerve to pretend none of this matters while both people quietly work out whether they wanted the same evening in the first place.

Traditional Dating Has Terrible Cost Controls

Choose the restaurant, order the wine, pick up the bill and by dessert a man may still have no idea whether she likes him, likes the restaurant or is simply having a pleasant evening at his expense. After spending heavily on the evening, he can leave with a peck on the cheek, a vague promise to text and absolutely no indication that either person was looking for the same thing. That is not necessarily romance failing. It may simply be a procurement process with inadequate specifications.

Beaver Babies take a more practical approach. She likes successful, generous men and appreciates dinners, gifts, experiences, travel or financial support. He likes attractive company and would rather meet a woman who already understands that generosity is part of the relationship than spend weeks pretending money never matters. The exact relationship belongs to the two adults involved, but at least they begin with a better idea of why they are both there.

The Most Respectable Transaction Nobody Is Having

Sugar dating has achieved something remarkable. It has created a relationship in which everybody is allowed to discuss money as long as nobody suggests that money has anything to do with the relationship. A Beaver Daddy can provide dinners, travel, gifts, rent assistance or an allowance. A Beaver Baby can provide affection, attention, exclusivity and the company of an attractive younger woman. Both sides generally understand why the other one showed up, but the official language remains reassuringly romantic.

That language matters. A Beaver Baby may see herself as dating one established man rather than serving a succession of clients, while a Beaver Daddy gets to describe himself as generous rather than as somebody who has put a budget behind his dating life. Add a nice restaurant and the word “mentorship” and suddenly economics has become romance. Canada should study this branding exercise.

Private-Sector Economic Stimulus

Canadian political leaders keep telling us to be resilient, buy Canadian, build Canada strong and become our own best customer. Ottawa says Elbows Up. Beaver Babies suggest something slightly more welcoming. The slogans change, the speeches get longer and the grocery bill continues to arrive with admirable consistency.

Canada Strong. Rent stronger. A Beaver Daddy cannot fix national productivity, but he can make one Canadian woman’s month considerably more comfortable while enjoying a dating life built around clearer expectations. A Beaver Baby cannot solve the housing crisis either, but she can decide that attractive company, good dinners and a generous older man are a more interesting personal economic strategy than waiting for another affordability announcement.

Beaver Babies and Beaver Daddies

The sales pitch usually sounds elite. She meets an older, distinguished and established man who can be mentor, supporter and companion. He meets a younger, prettier woman who appreciates his success and is considerably less interested in pretending that financial generosity is vulgar. Sex may become part of the relationship the same way it can in conventional dating, but the arrangement itself is presented as a broader exchange of attention, experiences and support.

Whatever terminology makes everybody comfortable, the practical advantage is simpler: meet somebody whose interests align with yours. Instead of spending heavily just to discover that you wanted entirely different relationships, begin with a woman who values generosity and a man who enjoys providing it. It is, if nothing else, a surprisingly efficient use of disposable income.
